Buenas Dios!
Yesterday was a great day - nothing like easing into life in Honduras! We hung around Janet's house all morning and into the afternoon. We went to a restaurant that was down the street for lunch and I found my new favorite drink. It's called lemonada con soda - lemonade with soda. It's such a refreshing and tasty treat! I need to figure out what's in it other than lemons, limes, and soda. Probably sugar since they love sweet things here!
This was lunch at Casa y Campo, which means Home in the Country. We had anafres as an appetizer, which is refried beans with a creamy cheese. Put a little hot sauce on that, and man it's good!
This was my tacos mexicanos. The meat is pork and then it had cilantro, raw onions, and pico de gallo.
These are pupusas, which is kind of like a Honduran grilled cheese. It's a tortilla stuffed with cheese.
This was the view from a hotel we went to last night. We met up with a mission group from Mississippi and had pizza with them. I was able to catch the lightning in the background in the next picture. See the difference?!?! Look in the top right corner.
Mama Nove will be framing this one for me!
El Picacho - the Jesus Statue! As I said earlier, this was done by the same guy who did the one in Rio de Janeiro. It's not as big though.
I'm going to try and get a picture of El Picacho from down below sometime soon so you can see Him looking down on the city.
He's pretty big!
This is a view of Teguc from El Picacho. See the big dark spot? That's the bottom of the city, and when Hurricane Mitch came through in 1998, it took out the lowest point of the city because that's where all of the water went. The water rose up 30 feet - about four stories high. They still haven't rebuilt this area yet. Hurricane Mitch is said to have set Honduras back 20 years.
Do you see the red and white lights that form a rectangle? That's the runway of the Teguc airport! I saw two planes land while we were out there! So crazy how short the runway is!
Okay, I have to run - we're passing out 450 pairs of shoes in a village this morning.
Tenga un buen dia! Have a good day!
Adios!
Great pictures! I can't wait to hear more!
