I'm Off to Tegucigalpa, Honduras!

Hi Everyone!  Or should I say...Hola!

As most of you already know, I'm headed to Honduras tomorrow!  You're probably wondering two things: 1) what am I going to be doing in Honduras, and 2) how the heck do you say the name of that city?!?!  I'll tackle the second question first by spelling it out for you phonetically.  Te-goo-see-gull-pa, but since I want to impress the locals, I'll be calling it Teguc (Te-goose) from now on.

I'm going to be working with a women's nonprofit organization called Mi Esperenza.  They focus on providing women with the necessary tools that will enable them to start their own businesses, and provide for their families.  They teach business, computer, and sewing classes, and they have a beauty salon school as well.  I will also spend part of my time working with a volunteer group, and we will be building houses, handing out food, and visiting schools, hospitals, and orphanages.  I'm so excited to get started!

I am also going try to do some field research while I'm in Honduras.  I'm taking a summer class about ethnic conflict around the world, so I'm going to try to find out more about how women are affected by, and deal with violence in an urban setting.  It will definitely be a challenge considering the fact that I don't speak Spanish, but I'll be with people who do, so hopefully I can get some valuable information!

I'm going to try my best to post something every day or so, but I've been told I'm going to be incredibly busy, so I can't make any promises!  I'll post again tomorrow after I get to Teguc!

ADIOS!
